Cholesterol is a waxy, soft, fatty substance found in all cells of the human body. 80% of cholesterol is produced by body itself (liver cells) other 20 % we get with food. Human organism uses cholesterol to work properly. Cholesterol provides the stability of cellular membranes of all living organisms. It is essential in the production of bile acids, vitamin D, different steroid hormones, including hydrocortisone, cortisone, aldosterone, female hormones estrogens and progesterone, man hormone - testosterone.
According to the latest data, cholesterol plays an important role in brain synapse activity and function of the immune system, including protection from cancer. In blood cholesterol is found in the form of soluble complexes with special proteins. These complexes are called lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins – low density lipoproteins(LDL) and high density lipoprotein(HDL). The high level of LDL (bad cholesterol) in blood can increase the risk of heart diseases. Bad cholesterol are deposited onto arteries walls, forming atherosclerotic plaques. It decreases elasticity and blood flow is reduced. Sometimes atherosclerotic plaques can disengage and block the vessels, causing heart attack or stroke.
HDL or good cholesterol protects our body form atherosclerosis. It picks up extra cholesterol from the blood vessels and brings it to the liver for destruction.
Therefore, atherosclerosis treatment must include a low cholesterol diet with physical exercise and different medicines like Sortis, Atoris, Simvastatin, Medostatin and others.
